aff chair climbs everest
Intreprid is the word that most springs to mind when thinking about AFF Chair Cheryl Bart at the moment. She and her daughter Nicki were stuck at Base Camp on Mt Everest, along with many other mountaineers who were unable to proceed to the summit for a number of days, as the Chinese army cleared the mountain because of fears for the progress of the Torch of Harmony. The Chinese army finally gave permission on 6 May although the Nepalese Government have told them that they want to co-operate with the Chinese and will be curtailing communications by mountaineers. This trip is sponsored by BigPond and news can be gathered at Cheryl’s blog www.bigpondeverest.com

ADELAIDE FESTIVAL OF ARTS
Forbidden Lie$ has just won the top award at the 4th Aljazeera Documentary Film Festival at Doha (Qatar). Director Anna Broinowski was there to collect cash prize of $15,000 for the Golden Award which was broadcast to millions of Aljazeera viewers throughout the Middle East.
Anna said it was extremely exciting and gratifying to know that the film speaks so strongly to people in the Middle East as audiences there obviously have a strong personal investment in Norma's lies being exposed. And they still laugh at all the same jokes. She and producer Sally Regan are off to the San Francisco Film Festival where the film is screening to secure US distribution.
The short film Swing (dir: Chris Haughton, prod: Louise Pascale) will have its American premiere at a screening of award winning Australian shorts in New York called Short Films Today. It’s been selected into Liberta in Croatia, sold locally to Ronin Films and has been invited to Expression En Corto in Mexico. Louise commented that “just when I thought it was time to put the baby to bed a new lease of life has come along.”The 2008 Triumphant Refugee Film Festival
