TOWNSHIP STORIES: exclusive OFFER!

ADELAIDE FESTIVAL OF ARTS

At the Adelaide Film Festival we're all about recommending the best cultural events and shows to our subscribers. The 2008 Adelaide Festival of Arts has a program jam packed with incredible world class theatre, film and music. One absolutely unmissable theatre show is Township Stories - we've been lucky enough to secure an exclusive offer for AFF subscribers for $35 tickets - that's a $21 saving!!!

Township Stories has been hailed as “one of the most remarkable pieces of theatre to emerge from post-apartheid South Africa. Extraordinary. Compelling.” It is a nail-biting thriller set against the backdrop of life in a post-apartheid South African township.

Township Stories follows the fate of a schoolgirl who flees her home after a lifetime of squabbling and abuse, only to find solace in the arms of a gangster believes that life’s problems can be solved with violence. Elsewhere, a father brutalises his son (Zenzo Ngqobe) who is having an affair with a woman who runs an illegal drinking house. Living in the township is harsh - it’s a struggle just to stay alive and, with a serial killer on the loose, life has just become a whole lot worse.

And as the horrific stories unfold on stage, soulful music from Louis Armstrong, Paul Simon, Tracy Chapman, Norah Jones and traditional South African Kwaito music interweave with the action to provide a moving, ironic and poignant backdrop.

Paul Grootboom, who directed as well as co-wrote the production, is one of South Africa’s hottest young playwrights and known as the “Township Tarantino”. Talking of his experiences of growing up in the townships he says, “It was a mixture of good and bad, but mostly bad. And although I am happy to have those experiences, it is a life I never would want to live through again.”

Township Stories has already enjoyed huge acclaim in South Africa, having played at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town and the State Theatre in Pretoria. It has since toured to England and the Edinburgh Festival where it won the prestigious Herald Angel Award . It was also a huge success at the 2006 Vienna Festival.
